All eyes on Rojava: stop the violence against Kurds in Syria!

The European Free Alliance condemns the increasing attacks against Kurdish neighbourhoods and territories in Syria, which could lead to a major humanitarian crisis

The situation in Syria is deteriorating. On January 16, we warned about violent attacks against Kurds in Aleppo, targeting civilians and causing displacement. Now, the offensive of the Syrian army is escalating and attacking the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES) and Rojava directly, where the density of the Kurdish population is greater.

Even amid global turmoil, the world cannot stay silent and just watch the new Syrian regime expelling and assassinating civilians, and violating the human rights of the Kurdish people. Kurdistan has always been an ally in the fight against ISIS in the region. Now it’s time for the international community to step up and take action to avoid a major humanitarian crisis. “International institutions should consider imposing sanctions”, said EFA President Lorena López de Lacalle. We call for the cessation of the attacks, the safeguarding of DAANES’ autonomy, and the protection of the civil population, following the international humanitarian law.

Women’s rights at stake

Rojava represents an egalitarian and democratic nation, where gender equality and women’s rights are a cornerstone. During the ongoing Syrian aggression, women are being particularly targeted. It is imperative to unite in support for Kurdish women. All women deserve to live with freedom and dignity. The EFA Women’s Forum wants to express our full support to our sisters from Kurdistan, with whom we have always been joining efforts for a more equal, democratic, and free world.
