We condemn the theocratic regime that is ruling Iran, but also the attack carried out by the US and Israel, as it clearly violates international law
This week, once again, the world is witnessing the consequences of imperialism. Leaders of the world’s major powers believe they are above the law and entitled to attack the rest of the world as they please. Since the beginning of the year, we have seen how the US, under Trump’s administration, has bombed Venezuela, threatened Greenland – an autonomous territory of an EU country –, and has now started a regional war in the Middle East, with Israeli collaboration.
The European Free Alliance condemns the authoritarian and theocratic regime that is ruling Iran. We stand in solidarity with the people of Iran who took to the streets in December and fought for their freedom and human rights. We support Iranian women who bravely fight against gender-based violence. Most of these brave heroes have faced strong repression and human rights violations under the ayatollah regime, and they deserve a proper process of democratization to live in freedom.
But we also condemn the attack carried out by the United States and Israel, as it constitutes a clear violation of international law. No one is above the law. The world’s major powers have a significant responsibility to uphold the rules that ensure peaceful coexistence among nations. And Trump, Netanyahu, and Putin — who already began his own dangerous path more than four years ago by attacking Ukraine — are showing that they are not up to that responsibility.
Civilians always pay the highest price
Imperialistic wars are putting many people’s lives at stake. It comes as no surprise that Trump is not doing this for democracy or freedom, but for his own personal interests. He serves only his economic and geopolitical interests. He doesn’t care about all the suffering and all the lives that will be lost as long as he gets his oil and resources (while conveniently shifting attention away from the controversies surrounding him).
From our side, the European Union must take up its responsibility. We cannot collaborate with this imperialist turn. We should stand together for peace and respect for international law. By acting together, we have the power to push for the de-escalation of the conflict and to resume diplomatic relations. We also have an important role in backing the Iranian civil society in their struggle for a genuine democratization process.
