The US aggression against Venezuela is an attack against international law, the UN Charter, and the multilateral system we stand for
2026 has started with yet more violations of international law. The US operation in Venezuela is one more sign of geopolitical chaos unleashed by Trump. It violates international law and must be condemned by all democratic forces that believe in a future of peace. The UN Charter and international order were designed to create a system where the world’s nations could coexist peacefully, following a set of rules. This equilibrium will disappear if we continue to allow powerful nations to violate the law for their own interests.
EFA condemns all imperialist attitudes. The world is not a playground for Great Powers to bully smaller countries, but a community of nations who each have the right to determine their own future. In this case, self-determination for the Venezuelan people is non-negotiable. The Venezuelan people are the only ones that hold the right to decide the future of their country. This is why EFA calls the international community to step up in defence of international law.
The “Donroe Doctrine” and the law of the jungle
Furthermore, Trump’s “Donroe doctrine” might go beyond Latin America. The EU must stand up for its founding principles, for peace and coexistence and cannot remain silent in front of highly interventionist and unpredictable turns in foreign policy where the use of force and military power is normalized paving the way to a world again divided by great spheres of influence exclusively based on preserving domestic economic interests. Trampling on international law sets an extremely dangerous precedent as it means that intimidation and the law of the jungle prevail in international relations.
A world governed by spheres of influence rather than rules sets us back to times which no one would like to recall. History cannot be forgotten. The EU cannot allow for that. The EU must stand strong and united, prioritizing coordination and common action in defence of its founding principles if it wants to simply have a say in international politics and politically exist.
