Greenland is not for sale!

The European Free Alliance stands firmly with the people of Greenland and their right to self-determination: big powers cannot buy, invade, or annex lands

The European Free Alliance is deeply concerned about the direction that the Trump administration is taking in international politics. Since he became President, we have been seeing a pattern of behaviour that shows no respect for smaller nations: threats to Canada and Mexico, negotiating with Putin about Ukraine’s future… This 2026, after attacking Venezuela and capturing President Nicolás Maduro to increase US control over the country and its resources, now the magnate’s eye has fixed again on Greenland.

Today, the foreign ministers of Greenland, Vivian Motzfeldt, and Denmark, Lars Løkke Rasmussen are, are meeting US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance. The Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Fredrik Nielsen, already rejected any offer from the US, making clear that the territory does not have any will to become American land. President Trump raised the tone, and the threat of a military invasion is becoming a concern.

The rule of international law

From EFA, we stand with the people of Greenland. Greenland is not for sale! It is a nation and, right now, a self-ruling territory of Denmark. Its future is not a good for buying and selling, but the decision of all Greenlanders. The democratic right to self-determination is simple: decisions need to come from the grassroots, from the people, and not from the leaders of the world’s biggest states who concentrate power and resources.

Therefore, in these moments of uncertainty and challenging international relationships, the EU needs to step up to protect the democratic values and international law. The world cannot become a tyranny ruled by the big and powerful countries. Small states should not be afraid of losing their sovereignty to the will of the world’s powers. It is time to step up and engage in diplomatic efforts to bring back the rule of international law and mutual respect.
