The 2026 U.S. Midterms: a reminder of democracy’s power

“EFA welcomes this strong demonstration of democracy and hopes the United States will continue to uphold international solidarity, respect for international law and cooperation among nations.” –  Lorena Lopez de Lacalle, EFA President

Yesterday, people across the United States took part in the 2026 mid-term elections, sending a powerful reminder to the world: democracy belongs to the people, and their voices matter.

For the European Free Alliance, this is a reminder of a fundamental principle: democracy must be strengthened at every level. It must give communities, nations, and regions a meaningful voice in decisions that shape their lives and their future. No government or parliamentary majority should consider its power unconditional, something that President Trump administration can’t understand: democratic mandates come with a responsibility to listen, respect pluralism and remain accountable to the people.

Voting matters and every vote has irreplaceable value

EFA President, Lorena Lopez de Lacalle, states that this is sign that “voting matters and every vote has irreplaceable value”. EFA President also mentioned that “democracy draws its strength from citizens’ participation and mobilisation, and that History can change when people make their voices heard and stand up for their democratic values”. The message for Europe and the international community is clear: democracy is not simply about winning elections or holding a majority. It is about respecting institutions, protecting rights, listening to different voices, and ensuring that political power is always subject to democratic scrutiny.

We take these elections as an example of the power of democratic mobilisation and a reminder that citizens can shape their future through peaceful participation. At EFA, we believe that the future must be decided by the people, in every nation, every region and every community.
